This is an autobiographical account by Christabel Bielenberg about her years in Germany between 1939 and 1945. Christabel was a British woman who married Peter Bielenberg a lawyer in 1934. The opening chapter deals with the years before the war begins. She speaks about events, which preceded the war such as anti-Jewish sentiments, the dissolution of the Trade Unions and all political parties, and the rise of Hitler to power. The Bielenbergs moved to Berlin with their two sons in 1939 just as war broke out. She has another son who was born in 1942. He was called Christopher. She speaks about a man called Herr Neisse who worked as a gardener in their house and how after the war resistance fighters had hanged him. The story is filled with anecdotic incidents about their neighbors and different events that happened to them.
